A week is an exact seven-day interval

Seven consecutive calendar dates span a full week, regardless of which weekday starts the interval. For example, Monday to the following Monday is seven elapsed days, exactly one week. Monday to Sunday in the same week is six elapsed days if the starting date is excluded.

Whole weeks and leftover days

Take the absolute elapsed days, divide by seven, and keep the remainder. An interval of 31 days equals four complete weeks and three days. A result written as 4.43 weeks is an approximate decimal, while four weeks and three days preserves the exact integer breakdown.

Calendar weeks versus elapsed weeks

A “calendar week” can mean an ISO week, which runs from Monday through Sunday, or a week that begins Sunday in some locales. Two events in the same ISO week do not necessarily have fewer than seven days between them. The interval tool computes elapsed weeks, not the number of week-label boundaries crossed.

Leap-year example

January 1, 2024 through January 1, 2025 spans 366 days: fifty-two full weeks and two additional days. The extra day is caused by February 29, 2024. Simply multiplying 365 by the number of years would undercount an interval that crosses that date.

Planning recurring check-ins

A weekly review could happen every seven elapsed days after the chosen anchor date. For medical appointments, work shifts, or contractual deadlines, verify the actual rule because some systems use named weekdays or count inclusive business days rather than seven-day blocks.

Check in a spreadsheet

With A1 containing the starting date and B1 the ending date, =INT(ABS(B1-A1)/7) returns complete weeks. =MOD(ABS(B1-A1),7) returns leftover days. These formulas assume both cells contain real spreadsheet dates and the basic elapsed-day convention.

Using weeks for pregnancy, payroll or medicine

Some domains express durations in weeks, but their starting convention may not be the date of a visible event. Medical pregnancy dating, payroll cycles and academic timetables each follow specific rules. The arithmetic of seven-day blocks is straightforward; deciding which date to use as day zero requires the appropriate domain source. Do not use a generic weeks-between-dates counter as a substitute for professional rules.

What happens with negative intervals?

If an event is upcoming, the difference from its date back to today is negative. The absolute weeks-and-days distance is still easy to interpret, but a statement such as “four weeks ago” should not be used for a future event. Look at both the labels and the full start/end dates before copying a result into a report or reminder.

Decimal weeks need careful rounding

An interval of ten elapsed days is one week and three days, or roughly 1.43 decimal weeks. Rounding to one decimal place gives 1.4, which loses some precision. Full weeks plus leftover days is generally clearer for concrete calendar planning. If you must report decimal weeks for analysis, say how many decimal places were used and preserve the raw day count for audit.

Recording a weekly interval for other people

When you share a weeks calculation with a colleague, include the two dates in an unambiguous format, the number of complete seven-day intervals and any leftover days. It is helpful to state whether the first date is included. If an organization uses ISO weeks for reports, include the ISO week-year as a separate field so the week label is not mistaken for elapsed time. A personal countdown may count a starting day differently from a project timesheet; the arithmetic is only as clear as the agreed convention.

For milestones every two weeks, add fourteen actual calendar days repeatedly to the original reference date. This avoids drift from estimating half-months, which vary in length. If a desired checkpoint falls on a weekend, shift the meeting date separately while preserving the actual milestone date in records.

Frequently asked questions

How many whole weeks are in 31 days?

Four complete weeks and three remaining days.

Is the ISO week number the number of weeks between dates?

No. ISO week numbers label calendar weeks; a week interval is always seven elapsed days.

Does February 29 affect the weeks calculation?

Yes. A date range spanning a leap day includes one additional calendar day.

Can I export a weeks milestone table?

Yes. The date table lists every consecutive day so you can locate weekly checkpoints.
