Understanding the answer

A date’s day-of-year number is its position from January 1: January 1 is day 1, and December 31 is day 365 in a common year or day 366 in a leap year. The number is not the same as the number of full days since New Year’s Day.

For a selected date, the ordinal day equals the count of calendar dates from January 1 through that date, inclusive. For example, October 28, 2026 is day 301 of 365, but only 300 complete date boundaries have elapsed since January 1. The ISO week number is a separate Monday-based calculation.

Day of year and days elapsed are different

Today can simultaneously be day 300 of the year and 299 days since January 1. The day number starts at one, while a conventional elapsed-day count starts at zero. That one-day difference is essential when spreadsheets and articles compare results.

The ISO week question

Week numbers follow conventions, and ISO-8601 weeks begin on Monday with week one containing January 4. It is possible for the first or last days of a calendar year to fall in another ISO week-year.

Spreadsheet calculation that works

In Excel or Google Sheets, the day-of-year number for a date in A1 is =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,1)+1. To get the current ordinal date use =TODAY()-DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),1,1)+1. Use ISOWEEKNUM where available for ISO weeks.

2026 calendar worked example

2026 is a 365-day common year: 261 Monday–Friday weekdays and 104 weekend days. These totals exclude local public holidays.

Compare 2026 with surrounding years

Leap years contain 366 days; common years contain 365. A day-of-year counter must change its upper bound by year, and the last ordinal day of 2028 is day 366. The number of weekdays below is calculated for Monday through Friday before excluding public holidays.

Year Calendar days Weekdays Weekend days Leap year?
2026 365 261 104 No
2027 365 261 104 No
2028 366 260 106 Yes
2029 365 261 104 No

How Many Days Are Left in the Year?

Subtract the current ordinal day from the year’s total: 365 in 2026 or 366 in a leap year. On October 27, 2026, 65 days remain after that date. This excludes the current date; for inclusive counting, choose a different convention explicitly.

What Week Number Is It?

ISO week numbering follows ISO 8601: weeks begin on Monday, and week one is the week containing January 4. In a year-end report, write the ISO week-year as well as the week number to avoid mixing December 31 with the next calendar year.

What Is a Day Number?

An ordinal day starts with January 1 as 1. For example, October 27, 2026 is day 300 of 365. Its zero-based elapsed-day count from January 1 is 299, which explains the frequent one-day disagreement in search snippets.

How To Calculate the Day of the Year Using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel

For A1 as the start date and B1 as the end date, =B1-A1 counts elapsed calendar days. For A1’s day of year, use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,1)+1. =ISOWEEKNUM(A1) returns the ISO week in supporting spreadsheet versions; =NETWORKDAYS(A1,B1) counts weekdays inclusively.

For the Current Date

In Excel or Google Sheets, enter =TODAY()-DATE(YEAR(TODAY()),1,1)+1 to display the day of year automatically. Because TODAY() uses the spreadsheet environment’s date settings, check its timezone when collaborating across locations.

For Any Date

Put the date you want to inspect in cell A1 and use =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,1)+1. The date can be a future or historical year, and Excel will account for leap days in the actual calendar.

How Leap Years Shift the Count

Under the Gregorian rule, a year divisible by 4 is usually a leap year, but century years need to be divisible by 400. Thus 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2026 and 2027 are not, and 2100 will not be one.

Milestone timeline and full date table

How to calculate and verify the result

For What Day of the Year Is It?, start with January 1 of the selected year, remembering that the ordinal date is elapsed days plus one. In a 366-day leap year the last date is numbered 366, not 365. ISO week numbers follow a separate Monday-based system and can span two calendar years.
